Three Deer
Three deer pass.
They jump headlights and disappear;
An omen to an unknowable future.
You say:
“This is a very bad sign.”
Yet we push on,
Unshaken by a moonless night.
I know that the darkness emboldens us—
A gift from our ancestors
Who learned how to not shake
In the cold cave nights.

I stand before the devil and rebuke him.
For I am the devil and I have courage enough to face myself.
I quiet myself before God and I know him.
For I am the Lord God in the flesh and the infinite holiness of the universe.
I know God as I know myself.
And I know that I am nothing more than the dream of the universe—
A dream that slips from memory as she opens her morning-dew eyes…
